Newton Falls Historical Walk

We have chosen to highlight some of our town History by featuring a select few places for your viewing pleasure. Please be aware that each site will feature presentations and information that will start each hour on the hour throughout the walk.

The sites will be manned from 10 AM to 4 PM on Saturday, September 2nd, 2006 only.

Some sites, feature specific events at specific times. These are:

Rededication of the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier with a 21 Gun Salute at the Township Cemetery on North Canal Street that will take place at 10 AM.

The Stephen Foster Chorus will perform at 1:00 PM at the Gazebo at Veteran’s Park.

A special family Story Time will be held at the Newton Falls Public Library at 3:00 PM.


One of the featured stops is the Jacob’s Century Home located on North Milton Boulevard next to Video Update. This stop will feature our very own Red Hat Ladies with quilts, knitting, crocheting, spinning wheels and many other old fashioned activities. Local Girl Scout Troops will be featured in historical clothing and will be playing some old fashioned games on the lawn.

One of the stops features Marge’s Beauty Shop and Bill’s Barber Shop located on the corner of East Broad Street and River Road. This was once the Railroad Station and Telegraph Office.

President McKinley campaigned on his Whistle Stop at Newton Falls as shown below.

Stories report that Abraham Lincoln’s Funeral Train passed through town. At this stop President Abraham Lincoln (impersonator) will be there, as well as someone to show and tell you about the old telegraph equipment.


The Newton Falls Fire District Fire Station is another stop on our walk. Our local department will have the Old Pumper on display along with a various other memorabilia.

The Township Cemetery will feature the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. This group has put many hours into researching our Civil War Soldiers and will be honoring them through telling their stories and giving information on the cemetery itself.

Faces Lounge was once the Manos Theater. The Manos Theater was one of two theaters in Newton Falls. This stop will feature a short video about 1985 tornado and its aftermath.

Veteran’s Park Picture

Veteran’s Park with the historic cannon called the Democrat is located on the corner of Broad Street and Ridge Road. The memorial to veterans in this park was design by Harry Richter a local artist. The Democrat was restored to its present state. Information will be given to visitors about the restoration.

The Newton Falls Public Library had its earliest start in the basement of the old high school in 1930.

In the late 1950’s, the library built it’s own building located between the High School and Junior High on North Center Street.

In the 1980’s the library was built in it’s current location.
